The Glittering Prizes by Television Personalities from the album: ...And Don't the Kids Just Love It

The Glittering Prizes | Television Personalities

The more I listen to …And Don’t The Kids Just Love It, the more I feel that Television Personalities were one of the first indie rock bands.

Last Days of Disco by Yo La Tengo

Last Days of Disco | Yo La Tengo

“And the song said “Let’s be happy”
I was happy
It never made me happy before
And the song said “Don’t be lonely”
It makes me lonely
I hear it and I’m lonely more and more”

From A Motel 6 by Yo La Tengo

From a Motel 6 | Yo La Tengo

“pull a woolen blanket across my eyes
dream a quiet place for us to fight
oh no, your heart is broken
don’t you think that’s a little trite?”

Juno by Life Without Buildings from the album: Any Other City

Juno | Life Without Buildings

This whole album’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard. Most people think that the vocals are the most striking thing about this really short-lived band (and they probably are), but I still can’t get over how pretty the guitar parts are, along with the bass lines. I don’t think the amount of new bands that I truly love would even reach the double digits, but Life Without Buildings would definitely be one of them, even if they did only release one album.

In A Jar by Dinosaur Jr from the album: You're Living All Over Me

In a Jar | Dinosaur Jr.

Big Dipper by Built To Spill from the album: There's Nothing Wrong With Love

Big Dipper | Built to Spill

It’s practically summertime, which for me is synonymous with overplaying ’90s Built to Spill songs.

Divorce Song by Liz Phair from the album: Exile in Guyville

Divorce Song | Liz Phair

“And when I asked for a separate room
It was late at night
And we’d been driving since noon
But if I’d known
How that would sound to you
I would have stayed in your bed
For the rest of my life
Just to prove I was right
That it’s harder to be friends than lovers
And you shouldn’t try to mix the two
Cause if you do it and you’re still unhappy
Then you know that the problem is you

And it’s true that I stole your lighter
And it’s also true that I lost the map
But when you said that I wasn’t worth talking to
I had to take your word on that
But if you’d known
How that would sound to me
You would have taken it back
And boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Burned it up and thrown it away

You put in my hands a loaded gun
And then told me not to fire it
When you did the things you said were up to me
And then accused me of trying to fuck it up
But you’ve never been a waste of my time
It’s never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you’ll be alright

And the license said
You had to stick around until I was dead
But if you’re tired of looking at my face I guess I already am
But you’ve never been a waste of my time
It’s never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you’ll be alright”

Exile in Guyville is such a perfect album.

Gamera by Tortoise

Gamera | Tortoise

I know the song’s not terribly inventive, and that it’s really easy to spot these guys’ influences, and that even their look seems a little recycled (scrawny, curly-haired lead singer, emotionless female bassist, all of them wearing over-sized clothes), but it’s still a really great track. I’m a sucker for fuzzy guitar sounds and laid-back ’90s indie rock, so this song is perfect for me.

One More Hour by Sleater-Kinney from the album: Dig Me Out

Never knew that this was about Corin and Carrie’s breakup.

Huh.

Pink Frost by The Chills

New Zealand’s held some really, really, really great music during the ’80s and ’90s.

I personally think that The Chills trump them all, though. Those quiet notes played about twenty seconds into the song, after the upbeat intro, but before the vocals, is one of the prettiest guitar/bass lines I’ve ever heard.

And everything after that part kicks ass, too, of course.

This little lightning bolt has been making me so happy lately.
