Is it impressive or sad that I would be able to carry on an entire conversation by just quoting ’90s R&B songs?
Too Drunk To Dream | The Magnetic Fields
“So why do I get plastered?
and why am I so lonely?
It’s you, you heartless bastard
You’re my one and only
I gotta get
too drunk to dream
cause dreaming only makes me blue
I gotta get
too drunk to dream
because I only dream of you
I gotta get
too pissed to miss you
or I’ll never get to sleep
I gotta drink
wine not to pine for you
and God knows that ain’t cheap
And God knows that ain’t cheap”
Can’t Hardly Wait | The Replacements
“I’ll be home when I’m sleeping
I can’t hardly wait”
The First Big Weekend | Arab Strap
I feel like Aidan Moffat’s spoken delivery is either a love it or hate it kind of situation. I can totally see how his mumbling, Scottish accent can turn people off, but I really enjoy it. What I really love about this song though, his how totally unpretentious it is. All this song is about is a weekend consisting of getting drunk, attempting to hit on people, getting drunk again, and passing out. It also has a great line about The Simpsons.
The Classical | The Fall
I remember hearing that during Pavement’s early days, they would cover this, and Stephen Malkmus would end the song saying, “he hates us, he hates us”, in reference to Mark E. Smith. I always thought that was hilarious.
I feel like I’ve learned more from feminist blogs this summer than I’ll learn from school this semester.
Hollaback Girl | Gwen Stefani
It’s Not Funny Anymore | Hüsker Dü
“Play what you want to play
Hear what you want to hear
Don’t worry about the result
Or the effect It has on your career”
Which Will | Nick Drake
“Which will you go for
Which will you love
Which will you choose from
From the stars above
Which will you answer
Which will you call
Which will you take for
For your one and all
And tell me now
Which will you love the best
Which do you dance for
Which makes you shine
Which will you choose now
If you won’t choose mine
Which will you hope for
Which can it be
Which will you take now
If you won’t take me
And tell me now
Which will you love the best?”
I think my favourite Smiths song of all time is I’m Just a Kid.
